Standing for election
Who is eligible?
The precise qualifications for standing as a candidate are set out in section 20 of the Greater London Authority (GLA) Act 1999 and in the Electoral Administration (EA) Act 2006. Generally, candidates for Mayor of London and the London Assembly need to be at least 18 years old on the day they are nominated, and a citizen of the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, European Union or Commonwealth. At least one of the following must also apply:
- They are registered to vote in a local government election in Greater London.
- They have lived in Greater London for the past 12 months.
- They have owned or rented property in Greater London for the past 12 months.
- Greater London has been their principal or only place of work for the past 12 months.
There are also circumstances that can prevent someone standing as candidates for Mayor of London or the London Assembly. Details of these can be found in section 21 of the GLA Act 1999.
How to stand for election
If you would like to stand as a candidate for Mayor of London or the London Assembly on 1 May 2008, you will need to fill out the necessary forms and fulfil the nomination requirements. Nomination packs will be available from London Elects from early 2008. Although the election timetable is not yet confirmed, it is likely that the closing date for receipt of nominations will be at the end of March 2008.
