Salt Whisky Bar - a small but perfectly formed whisky bar on a corner of the Edgware Road. Not a predictable location for an upscale drinking destination but then this is not your typical hip drinker Soho hangout. Salt is an unlikely combination of downstairs whisky bar and upstairs Italian restaurant. The guys behind Salt are gambling on this whisky (and whiskey) renaissance to last a little more than a year. Judging by the amount they must have spent on stocking the bar, I imagine their creditors are expecting to be in for the long haul.
The bar interior of warm black walnut woods, dark natural slate cladding and bespoke furniture softened by candlelight and cool lounge music creates an unusually convivial atmosphere that attracts a high hit of well turned out, fragrant and buzzy punters. So, the drinks. There are around 150 malt whiskies on offer, a number of blended whiskies, and some more from America and Asia. The cocktail list includes all the whiskey classics, along with plenty of non-whiskey mixes to keep non-believers happy.
For the whisky connoisseur the extremely knowledgeable bar boy team serve up an impressive portfolio of bourbon, rye and premium malt whisky’s (including 160 – 200 of the finest and rarest malts) but if whisky isn’t your tipple ask bar chief Jonny Lomas formerly of the Time Lounge in New York to mix you up one of his signature cocktails – try the Polish Plum mixed with Lanique Plum Vodka and a Choya Japanese plum liquor, fresh plums and lime. Divine! Two of them stuck out. The Honey Old Fashioned replaced the traditional bourbon with Bowmore, and was stirred with honey, ginger and orange zest. The Honey Fig Sour combined Glenfiddich Solera Reserve with honey, fig puree and lemon. Attracting a crowd that includes the likes of Coldplay and Kylie, Salt has established itself on the London landscape.
