Registering to vote

If you would like to vote in the London elections taking place on 1 May 2008, you must be on the electoral register. If you filled in the registration form delivered to your home last autumn, you should already be on the register. If you think you may not be registered, for example if you have recently moved home, you need to register to vote. You can register to vote in future elections at any time of the year, but to be eligible to vote in the May 2008 elections you must register by 16 April 2008.

If you are unsure whether you are registered, you can check by contacting your local borough council. The Electoral Commission's website, www.aboutmyvote.co.uk has the contact details of all the London borough councils. You can also download forms from the site that you need to fill in to register.

Who can register to vote?

You can register to vote if you:

  • live in London
  • are a British, Commonwealth or EU citizen*
  • are over 18 years old (16-17 year olds can also register so they can vote as soon as they become 18).

If you meet all of these criteria, you are entitled to be included on the electoral register, although the final decision rests with the electoral registration office at your local borough council.
